Sri Lanka Tea Exports for the month of March 2019 totaled 26.4 million kgs showing a gain of 0.3 million kgs against the volume of 26.1 million kgs registered for March 2018, according to the market report by the Tea Exports Association. Tea in bags and packets have shown a growth year on year whilst bulk tea showed a decline compared to the corresponding month of 2018.
As a part of Ceylon tea promotional campaign of the Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Toronto for 2020, the 8th Annual Toronto Tea Festival at Toronto Reference Library was organized in coordination with Tea Guild of Canada, which was held from 01-02 February 2020 at the Toronto Reference Library. The Toronto Tea Festival is Canada’s largest tea awareness program and the goal of participating at this promotional event was to contribute to and support sustainable growth within the Sri Lanka’s tea industry.
Sri Lanka’s tea output in the month of July rose 5.6 percent year-on-year (YOY) to 25.27 million kilos amid favourable weather conditions. According to Asia Siyaka Commodities, Sri Lanka’s cumulative tea production to date edged up 1.1percent YOY to 184.06 million kilos and was the highest since 2015.A 34.7 percent growth in high-grown tea production was a key contributor to the increase in the July production. This was the highest since 5.7 million kilos reported in 2014.Lowgrown tea production fell marginally to 16.35 million kilos.

In a matter of six days, Sri Lankan stakeholders built from scratch, operated and concluded trading ‘Ceylon Tea’ at the Colombo auction on a digital platform. Sri Lanka sold 6.5 million kilograms of Ceylon tea with 0.9 million kilograms of Ex-Estate tea and 2.9 million kilograms of Low Grown (Leafy/Tippy) teas at the third auction in June. At the previous auction on June 16 and 17 Sri Lanka sold 6.7 million kilograms of tea.

The much-awaited Ceylon Tea promotion will kick off this winter, with a total investment of Rs. 5 billion aimed at boosting exports which have struggled in recent months, an official confirmed. Sri Lanka Tea Board (SLTB) Director Promotion Pavithri Peiris told Daily FT the promotions would be conducted three ways, targeting Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs), public relations and search engine optimization in countries such as Russia, Ukraine, Japan, China, United Arab Emirates, Germany, the US, Chile, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Iran. NEW TEA BOARD FUNDING SCHEME FOR HIGH SHADE TREES Sri Lanka Tea Board has stepped up its support of the industry by setting up a funding scheme for high shade trees for tea lands of over 10 acres. It is offering subsidies for tea plucking lands falling in the medium and large-scale tea estate categories of over 10 acres, where tea has been cultivated already and establishment of high shade trees has not been made.
The Ceylon black Tea promotion campaign kicked off in December 2020, with a total investment of Rs.35million aimed at boosting “Ceylon Tea – The World Favorite Tea” though social media platforms. Sri Lanka Tea Board (SLTB) Director Promotion Pavithri Peiris told, the promotion campaign would be conducted through the social media platforms in countries such as Russia, Ukraine, Japan, China, Germany, USA, Chile, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, and Iran and the campaign is rolled out from December 2020 to March 2021 for three months period in each market.
Sri Lanka Tea Production for the period January – December 2020 totaled 278.5 million kg vis-à-vis 300.1 million kg of January-December 2019, showing a decrease of 21.6 million kg YOY. High Grown production for 2020 totaled 61.2 million kg compared to 61.7 million kg of January-December 2019, thus recording a decrease of 0.5 M/kg (-0.85%).
The tea industry witnessed an increase in production and began the year with lower export volumes, but with higher returns, brokers said yesterday. The country’s tea production in January increased by 5% to 23 million kilograms (MnKg) compared to 21.9 MnKg a year earlier, where the boost of production was generated entirely from the Low Grown sector. The year-on-year (YoY) low grown sector production increased from 13.3 MnKg in 2021 to 14.9 MnKg, which is at three-year high following more favorable growing conditions and availability of fertilizer. However, the high and mid growns were lower YoY 2020 by 5% and 6% respectively.
